Conditions for Selecting and Using the ASi-5 Successor Model

Note

If a defective device needs to be replaced , it is recommended to use a replacement device that has the same item number instead of the successor model.

Exchange when Redesigning, Revising or Modifying a System

When designing a new system or revising an existing machine , it is recommended to use the latest and most powerful devices. The successor models offer all the well-known advantages of the previous Bihl+Wiedemann ASi modules, plus a wealth of new functions and the best value for money.

Comparison of Functions and Technical Features

When designing a new system or modernising an existing machine, it is important to select the right device with the required  technical features.

Especially, when exchanging an ASi slave or ASi Safety slave with a successor model in an existing machine, care must be taken to ensure that particular technical characteristics are as similar as possible or even better (depending on the desired upgrade of the machine) than the one you have:

    • Number of (safe) inputs or outputs
    • Number of allocated ASi addresses/ASi slaves per ASi circuit
    • Supply voltage from ASi or from AUX
    • Max. supply current/derating
    • Number and position of connections for ASi, AUX and peripheral devices
    • Pin assignment for modules with M12/M8 connections
    • Dimensions
    • Required version of Bihl+Wiedemann software suites for configuration, diagnostics and commissioning

The successor models recommended by Bihl+Wiedemann are always as similar as possible to the respective archive articles with regard to the above criteria and at the same time they offer as many new functions and improved technology as possible.

Procedure with Differences in Technical Characteristics

Supply Voltage from AUX (24 V Auxiliary Power)

Changing the supply voltage from ASi to AUX (24 V auxiliary power) offers the advantage that in most cases considerably more current is available to supply the sensors or actuators, not only at each individual connection but also in total.

The voltage supply via AUX is provided by a standard 24 V power supply unit. Please make sure in advance that the performance characteristics of the power supply unit used are sufficient for the desired application.

ASi Slave Profile and Required ASi Specification of the Master

The ASi slave profile can vary to a certain extent between archived items and successor models depending on performance features and function. ASi slaves with different slave profiles are not exchange-compatible as successor models. The manual with the exchange instructions can be found in the enclosed documentation.

Bihl+Wiedemann ASi-5/ASi-3 masters have universal use and are compatible with slaves of all ASi generations. If you have any questions on the required profile of your ASi master, please feel free to contact our support team at any time.

ASIMON360 and ASi Control Tools360 With Hardware Catalog

In order to make optimal use of the ASi-5 slaves from Bihl+Wiedemann, it is recommended to use the most up to date version of the ASIMON360 or ASi Control Tools 360 software.

Not all successor models may be included in the hardware catalog of older Bihl+Wiedemann Software Suites (BW2916, BW2902).

It is recommended to check the Bihl+Wiedemann Software Suite regularly for updates via Help > About > Check for Updates.
