What is PROFIBUS?

PROFIBUS is an open fieldbus standard for networking sensors and actuators. It is used in various areas of industrial automation technology, e.g. in manufacturing, process and building automation. PROFIBUS enables communication between devices from different manufacturers without special interface adaptations. PROFIBUS-DP is a variant optimized for speed and low connection costs for fast data exchange at the field level. The controller communicates mainly cyclically with the field level, e.g. the Bihl+Wiedemann PROFIBUS gateways and connected ASi devices, via a serial connection.

PROFIBUS ASi-3 gateways in stainless steel offer an interface for a PROFIBUS fieldbus in accordance with IEC 61158 / IEC 61 784-1. These certified ASi gateways are available in various versions with IP20 protection rating. Some product variants enable Ethernet diagnostics and optionally allow functions of a small PLC to be executed in the gateway via a C program.

Integrated decoupling, ASi current measurement in the gateway

Access to ASi master and safety monitor via own software from Bihl+Wiedemann using the diagnostic interface (e.g. USB, RJ45, RS232). For certain devices with Ethernet-based fieldbus (PROFINET, EtherNet/IP), there is also the option of diagnostics and configuration directly via the fieldbus interface.

 

The latest version of the device description file of the gateway/gateway with integrated safety monitor (GSD, GSDML, EDS, etc.) is available in the "Downloads" section of the respective device.

Diagnostic and configuration interface

Detects whether the same address has been assigned to two ASi nodes. Frequent error when using a handheld addressing device.

Recognition of duplicate ASi addresses

Checks the ASi line for interference effects such as noise, external voltages, ...

ASi fault detector

Using a C-program offers the possibility to run mini-PLC functions with a gateway.

Safety, PROFIBUS ASi Gateways

The certified ASi gateways with integrated safety monitor are available in different versions with protection class IP20. Two product variants feature the Safe Link technology, which makes it possible to connect different system components easily and flexibly. One gateway offers integrated PROFIsafe communication for easy integration of the safe signals into the F-CPU.

PROFIBUS-Master Simulators

The PROFIBUS DP Master Simulator is an easy to use software for data exchange with PROFIBUS devices of many suppliers via PROFIBUS DP. The PROFIBUS DP Master Simulator can exchange data with many PROFIBUS devices even without GSD-file or type-file. The PROFIBUS devices can be put into operation with the default I/O window. Input data can be read and output data can be written. Furthermore the PROFIBUS DP Master Simulator also processes GSD-files. User parameters can be edited and the configuration can be modified and stored. The PROFIBUS station address can be changed as well with the PROFIBUS DP Master Simulator, this is useful for PROFIBUS I/O modules in protection class IP67 without addressing switches.

 

The PROFIBUS DP Master Simulator offers the possibility to scan a PROFIBUS network for connected devices and display them in a graphical way. In this case the PROFIBUS UART has to be connected directly to a PROFIBUS device. The I/O data and the PROFIBUS user diagnosis can be displayed binary, hexdecimal and now also as ASCII code. The PROFIBUS output data can be transmitted consistently to the PROFIBUS device. In type mode it is possible to set an output as long as the mouse button is pressed.

 

In addition, BW1257 supports a Log function as well as PROFIBUS DP V1. PROFIBUS devices can be operated in the acyclic mode DP V1. This is helpful especially for the commissioning of complex field devices like drives, modular I/O systems etc.

 

The PROFIBUS Master Simulator consists of the software and the PROFIBUS UART which is the ideal interface converter between the RS 232 interface of a PC and the PROFIBUS slave. The UART does not need any additional external power supply. Therefore it is also suitable for mobile use with a laptop or a notebook. The PROFIBUS UART is simply inserted between the PROFIBUS device and RS 232 connector cable.

 

Beside the software "PROFIBUS DP Mastersimulator" now DLL drivers for Windows 95/98, Windows NT as well as examples written in C are available for download on the homepage. This offers the possibility to use the PROFIBUS UART in an application in combination with an own software. However the PROFIBUS UART is a monitoring and commissioning tool for PROFIBUS devices, it is not designed to control automation processes.
